Traditions

Traditions is a new thing to me this year that I'm still getting use to. My family had never been apart or participated in any traditions. We honestly don't have any traditions. The school I went to had some, but I never really cared for them. They were pretty lame in my opinion. At converse there is a whole lot of them. They are really fun and I love how they sort of make you get involved in helping others to win spirt weeks and other traditions. It really gives everyone the chance to realize how little they have to do to make a huge impact.
One thing that I'm really involved in is charitys and helping out others. I participate in at least one mission trip a year and give to charities when I'm able to. The main charity I'm involved in is TOMS. I know almost EVERYONE has a pair but many just but them because they are "in" or are "fashionable." I've been involved with this group since they formed in 2006 and have been giving back to them in more ways than just buying a pair of shoes. Every year they have a day in April where no one wears shoes in hopes that people would realize how lucky they are and how important the little things really are.
A tradition I think would be cool is instead of just a day without shoes, people go a week without shoes. I think it would have a more effect of how lucky each of us really are. Also, I enjoy being barefoot very much. In todays society, people are too wrapped around themselves and don't take the time to really look at the world around them. What I would like to get out of this tradition is just realization. I don't expect everyone to give every cent they have to charities but for them to just acknowledge and be thankful for all that they have. I think this tradition would be an eye opener and effect a lot of people year after year.

  1. I love this idea. I once did that camping in the summer. Man, I did I love it and realized how great it is to have shoes to help cushion the rocks under my feet. Its good to learn how to appreciate things once in awhile.

  2. I love the TOMS mission statement and I totally support them and do the day without shoes too! I think having a week of realization would be great because it would encourage awareness as well as bonding our campus together!

  3. I love this idea, being about more than just ourselves. A whole week where we think about how fortunate we are would be a great way to bound the school behind a great cause. ^_^

  4. TOMS are actually pretty big here at Converse as well. We do have the Barefoot Day every spring--or, at least for the last few years. Be on the lookout for it!
