I have many time management challenges, one of them being me working at Bojangles in Gaffney, SC. I started working there last summer and will continue working there throughout the year. Right now I've been able to cut my hours down to weekends but it's still hard. I usually work four to close on Fridays, and two to close on Saturday and Sundays. Pretty much all of my classes give me homework or projects to do over the weekend and I never really have time to complete them all. I usually get back to Converse around 11 Sunday night and have to stay up late to get the homework done that's due Monday. I have five classes everyday of the week so I always have tons of homework to do and quizzes to study for. I just end up getting behind and having to work much later on homework then is needed.
Another time management challenge is practicing my instruments. With guitar being my primary I'm required to practice it an hour a day. I also have to practice piano half an hour a day. Since I'm new to learning music, it takes me longer to practice these instruments since it takes me awhile to understand the notes. So I usually end up spending more then the required time practicing.
A time management tool I use is keeping up with my work. I try and get as much work done in my free time as I can. Before the weekend hits I try and get, if not all, most of my homework done so I don't have to stress out about it Sunday night. I also study a lot. Since I'm new to reading music, if I don't keep up with my theory or musicianship homework, I will fall behind with practicing my guitar and piano. They both help balance each other out so I have to make sure I maintain that.
Some advice I would give to others is to not fall behind. They more you slack and just lay around when you know you have homework to do, the harder it's going to be getting it done that night. Usually if you fall behind in one class, you start to do the same in the others. Just make good studying, sleeping, and homework habits and everything will turn out A-ok!
This is a MUCH better blog entry, Kayla. Thank you for your work on it.
ReplyDeleteWow, that's some work schedule. The Friday schedule will start to get in your way pretty soon, given that Student Recitals are Fridays at 3:00 and 4:30. Give some thought to how much you MUST have those hours at THAT job. Would it be possible to transfer to Bojangles in Spartanburg, or to work fewer hours? I really do understand the need for funds, but time is money, and it might be worth getting by with less financial resources and have a few more hours. Too, fast food jobs can be pretty tiring--I can't imagine that you're not exhausted by Sunday night. And keep your eyes peeled for a better, more sustainable job. It might take awhile, but I bet that eventually you can set up a better situation.
Hey Kayla! I totally have the same problem. I have a job in my hometown that I got over the summer. I really enjoy my job and want to continue working there, but I spend so much time just driving the thirty minutes over there on the weekends. I've really had to make sure I have my homework done during the week so I don't have to worry about it on the weekends. Just a piece of advice (something that helps me make sure I get my homework done), consider small goals with rewards. Finish that theory homework, but afterwards reward yourself with ice cream, cookies, or candy. This is something that really helps me make sure I get my work done. (:
ReplyDeleteI really understand where you're coming from. I go home every other weekend and I usually don't get home until late at night. Then I have to stay up ALL NIGHT trying to get everything done. The going is tough, but I know you can do it! And if you ever need help with anything, just ask me. :) The only thing I would say is that you need to be careful with your wording. At some points I would trail off and not understand (not sure if that's just me), but other than that you did a wonderful job!
